Four US groups plan huge energy project to supply power to California

Four US companies, namely Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy, Magnum Energy, Dresser-Rand (recently acquired by Siemens) and Duke-American Transmission, are considering investing US$8bn in a giant green energy initiative aimed at supplying clean electricity to the Los Angeles area (United States) by 2023. The project would require the construction by Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy of 2,100 MW of wind parks in Chugwater (Wyoming) for an investment of US$4bn. It would also involve the construction of a large energy storage facility near Delta in Utah by Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy, Magnum Energy and Dresser-Rand; it would consist of four salt caverns (1.16 mcm in volume), storing compressed air (energy production equivalent to 60 GWh). A US$2.6bn transmission line would connect the wind park to the energy storage and would connect to a separate transmission line from the Utah storage facility to the Los Angeles area. The companies will submit their proposal to the Southern California Public Power Authority by early 2015 in response to the agency’s request for proposals to supply the Los Angeles area with renewable energy and electricity storage.
