The Ministry of Energy of New South Wales (NSW) (Australia) and AusEnergy Services Limited (ASL) have announced the commissioning of all four BESS and demand response projects selected in ASL’s 2023 firming tender, which together add 1 GW/3 GWh of dispatchable, on-demand firming capacity, i.e., the equivalent to around 8% of the total FY 2026 NSW summer peak demand.
The four projects are AGL Energy's 500 MW/1 GWh Liddell Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Muswellbrook, Akaysha Energy's 415 MW/1.66 GWh Orana BESS in Montefiores, Iberdrola Energy's 65 MW/130 MWh Smithfield BESS in Smithfield, and Enel X's 95 MW virtual power plant with a minimum dispatch duration of 2 hours.
ASL is currently conducting tenders for an indicative target of 2.5 GW of generation infrastructure and a further 12 GWh of long-duration storage infrastructure. A further generation tender, and an additional firming infrastructure tender are expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026 and in the first quarter of 2027, respectively.
