Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant (Finland) seeks new operating licences

Fortum has submitted a licence application to the Finnish government for a new operating licence for the two 496 MW units at the Loviisa nuclear power plant in southern Finland until the end of 2050. The group has also applied for a licence to use the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste final disposal facility in Loviisa until 2090, when the disposal facility will be permanently closed. Fortum would start the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in the middle of 2020s.

The Loviisa nuclear power plant consists of two 496 MW pressurized water reactors (PWRs). Loviisa-1 entered commercial operation in 1977 and is authorised to operate until the end of 2027. Loviisa-2 was commissioned in 1981 and is licenced until the end of 2030.
