Fortescue Metals Group, through its affiliate Pilbara Energy, is seeking approval for a 5.4 GW wind and solar project located 120 km south of Onslow, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia to supply the company's mining operations. The plans for the project have been submitted to the Western Australia’s Environmental Protection Authority. The project will include up to 340 wind turbines totalling more than 2 GW, a solar plant with a capacity of 3.3 GW and a 9,100 MWh battery energy storage system.
The project is part of Fortescue's Pilbara Generation Project, which initially aimed at developing 150 MW of gas-fired capacity, along with 150 MW of solar PV and 50 MW of battery storage, that would supply Fortescue's mines through a 275-km-long power transmission line.
