Flotation and Vårgrønn sign deals for 1.9 GW of floating wind off Scotland (UK)

Vårgrønn, a joint venture between Italy’s Plenitude (Eni) and HitecVision, and the renewable project developer Flotation Energy have signed exclusivity agreements to develop two floating offshore wind projects off Scotland (United Kingdom) in the North Sea, which will total 1.9 GW in capacity. The agreements were signed under Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round.

Once operational, the two floating offshore wind parks, named Green Volt (500 MW) and Cenos (1.4 GW), will provide renewable electricity to offshore oil and gas platforms, aiming to reduce carbon emissions from the assets they will supply, as well as to the UK grid. The projects are estimated to reduce emissions by around 3 MtCO2/year.

Scotland targets 11 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. At the national level, the United Kingdom aims to reach 50 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030 (13.8 GW as of end 2022). Scotland also has a 2045 net-zero target.
