The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) approved a May 2017 petition filed by the US power utility Florida Power & Light (part of the NextEra Energy group) and the Office of Public Counsel to shut down its 1,252 MW St. Johns River Power Park (Jacksonville, Florida) in January 2018. According to the PSC, the plant closure is expected to cut annual carbon emissions by 5.6 Mt, while saving customers an estimated US$183m.
The SJRPP power plant consists of two 626 MW (650 MW gross) coal-fired units commissioned in 1987 and 1988, and is jointly owned by FPL (20%) and JEA (80%), the municipally-owned electric provider for the City of Jacksonville. The power plant is no longer economical to operate - the plant is even one of the highest-cost generating facilities to operate and maintain for both FPL's and JEA's systems - and FPL is increasingly focusing on gas-fired and renewable power generation.
