FlexED plans a 1 GW gas-fired power plant in Mpumalanga (South Africa)

The South African aspirant independent power producer (IPP) FlexED plans to develop a 1 GW gas-fired power plant near Malelane, in Mpumalanga (South Africa). The Khanyazwe Flexpower project, located near the National Transmission Company South Africa’s (NTCSA’s) Khanyazwe substation and with confirmed access to the Rompco gas pipeline from Mozambique to South Africa, would be based on gas engines and would provide flexible power generation and ancillary services to the grid, to better integrate renewable sources.

The project would be developed in two phases. Initially, FlexED plans to take part in the Gas Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (GASIPPPP), which has a bid submission deadline of 31 October 2025. In a second phase, the company would submit bids into either future gas IPP programmes or for direct sales to either the System Operator or Energy traders.
