Flanders (Belgium) refuses to approve a 900 MW gas-fired project in Tessenderlo

The Flemish Environment Ministry (Belgium) has refused to grant a permit for the construction of a new gas-fired power plant in Tessenderlo, considering that the environmental impact assessment was not considering all impacts. Tessenderlo Group, which operates the 422 MW Beringen Tessenderlo gas-fired CCGT power plant, seeks to add a gas-steam turbine to reach a total capacity of 900 MW. The expansion project was authorised by a federal ministerial decree in December 2020 and the regional commission for environmental permits issued a favourable opinion for the project earlier in October 2021.

In August 2021, the European Commission cleared Belgium’s capacity mechanism, aimed at ensuring electricity supply after a nuclear phase-out in 2025. Belgium's seven nuclear reactors (5.9 GW) accounted for 44% of power generation in 2020. Belgium plans to auction 2.3 GW of new capacity in 2021, corresponding to two to three gas-fired power plants.
