Three South Korean companies, including Samsung Engineering, Lotte Chemical and Posco Holdings, and two Malaysian firms, comprising SEDC Energy, an affiliate of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), and the regional state-owned power utility Sarawak Energy Berhad, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to study the potential of supplying at least 900MW of hydropower for the H2biscus green hydrogen/ammonia project (H2biscus project) in Sarawak, Malaysia.
The five companies will jointly study the power supply capacity and facilities such as substations and transmission infrastructure that would be required to supply the plant. The completion of the H2biscus project feasibility study is anticipated within the end of 2022 and the goal of commercial production is set by the end of 2027.
The plant is expected to have an annual yield of 630,000 t of green ammonia, 600,000 t of blue ammonia, 460,000 t of green methanol, and 7,000 t of green hydrogen. Of the products to be produced in this project, all blue and green ammonia and blue methanol, except for a portion of green hydrogen which will be used locally in Sarawak, will be imported to South Korea, contributing to the country's carbon neutrality goal. A previous MoU on the project was signed between Samsung Engineering, Lotte Chemical, Posco Holdings and SEDC Energy in January 2022.
