Five BESS (7.9 GWh) advance through Australia's approval process

Five battery energy storage (BESS) projects representing a combined 7.9 GWh of capacity are advancing through approval stages across Australia. All projects have a four-hour duration or longer. Two projects have already been approved under the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, namely:

  • Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners's 780 MW Supernode North BESS in Queensland, with a 2-4 hour duration,
  • Belah BESS in Queensland, 400 MW/1.6 GWh, proposed by Eku Energy and LP Renewable Projects.

The three other projects have been newly filed under the EPBC Act, namely:

  • 500 MW/2 GWh Murchs Corner BESS in Victoria, proposed by Tasmanian developer Alternate Path,
  • 500 MW/2 GWh Robertstown BESS in South Australia, proposed by Revera Energy and to be built in two 250 MW/1GWh stages, and
  • 375 MW/1.5 GWh Swallow Tail BESS in New South Wales, proposed by AMPYR Australia.
