FirstGen receives government approval for Batangas LNG (Philippines)

Japanese utility Tokyo Gas and the Philippines-based company FirstGen Corporation have obtained a notice to proceed (NTP) for the construction and operation of a new 5 Mt/year (6.75 bcm/year) LNG import and regasification terminal south of Manila (Philippines). The partners may now go forward with the US$2bn project, which is slated to come onstream by 2024.

The two companies will develop the project to meet the gas needs of existing and future gas-fired power plants in Batangas province, as domestic supply from the Malampaya field in northern Palawan will cease its output by 2024.

Another LNG import and regasification project is currently being developed in Batangas by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), Phoenix Petroleum Philippines and Philippines National Oil Company (PNOC). Referred to as Tanglawan LNG, it is set to start commercial operations by 2023 and have a total regasification capacity of 2.2 Mt/year (3 bcm/year).
