First power at the 589 MW Changfang and Xidao offshore wind parks (Taiwan)

The Danish renewable energy company Copenhagen Offshore Partners has announced that the 589 MW Changfang and Xidao offshore wind parks, which are located about 11 km off the coast of Fangyuan, in Taiwan’s Changhua County, have achieved first power.

The first phase of the project (95 MW) involves the installation of ten 9.5 MW turbines before the end of 2022. The second phase, scheduled for 2023, will require the installing a further 47 turbines with a total capacity of 446.5 MW. The final phase of the project (47.5 MW) will involve the installation of five 9.5 MW turbines for the Xidao wind park in 2023. Upon completion, scheduled before the end of 2023, the project will consist of 62 Vestas V174-9.5 MW turbines. The project is owned by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), and by two local life insurance companies, Taiwan Life Insurance, and TransGlobe Life Insurance.

At the end of 2021, offshore wind represented less than 1% of Taiwan’s installed capacity (with 237 MW), as the island only installed its first offshore wind turbine in 2017. Currently, Taiwan has nearly 3 GW of wind projects under construction and almost 14 GW under development.
