First LNG cargo arrives at Italy’s new Piombino regasification facility

The Italian oil and gas company Eni has started offloading the first LNG cargo into Snam’s new LNG regasification terminal located in Piombino, Tuscany (central Italy). The terminal has a total processing capacity of 5 bcm/year, or approximately 7% of Italy's gas demand. The LNG was produced at Egypt’s Damietta liquefaction plant, in which Eni has invested to grow its integrated LNG portfolio.

Eni has acquired regasification capacity at the Piombino terminal as part of its strategy to diversify LNG supplies to Italy and completely replace Russian gas by 2024-2025. The terminal hosts a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) that the Italian gas grid operator Snam purchased from Golar LNG in June 2022. The terminal was approved by the government of Tuscany in October 2022.

Italy imported 95% of its gas needs in 2021 (73 bcm out of 76 bcm), and in 2020, 43% of its gas imports originated from Russia.
