FGEN LNG, a subsidiary of Philippine utility First Gen, has received a permit from the country’s Department of Energy (DOE) to operate and maintain for 25 years a 5 Mt/year LNG Terminal located in Batangas, Luzon Island (northern Philippines). The DOE issued the authorisation for the operation of the project for FGEN LNG’s own use over the period. The project’s initial phase includes converting the existing jetty into a multi-purpose jetty and constructing an adjunct onshore gas receiving facility.
In July 2023, First Gen announced that the BW Batangas floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) had been berthed at the LNG terminal. In September 2023, the terminal was commissioned. The LNG will be utilised by the company’s gas-fired power plants at its complex in Batangas City. On site, First Gen owns four gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 2 GW.
Due to the depletion of its domestic gas resources, notably of the Malampaya gas field, which is expected to run dry by 2027, the Philippines has multiplied LNG projects in the previous years and is now planning to develop seven LNG projects across the country.
