Finland’s greenhouse gas emissions fell by 11% in 2023 to reach 40.6 MtCO2eq

According to Finland's National Statistics Office, the country's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions decreased by 11% in 2023, reaching 40.6 MtCO2eq (-5.1 MtCO2eq compared to 2022). Finland’s 2023 GHG emissions represented a 43% decrease compared to 1990 and a 52% drop compared to their 2003 peak.

The decrease in emissions was primarily driven by the energy sector, which saw a reduction of 4.6 MtCO2eq, thanks to a reduced use of hard coal and peat in a context of higher nuclear, wind and hydro power generation. However, the energy sector remains the largest source of emissions, accounting for 70% of total emissions in 2023. Emissions from transports decreased by 0.4 MtCO2eq (slight increase in the share of biofuels in transports), while emissions from industrial processes and product use fell by 0.3 MtCO2eq (-6%).

The land use sector (LULUCF) was a net carbon sink in 2023, as the amount of carbon sequestered in different storage facilities during the year exceeded emissions by 1.3 MtCO2eq.
