Finland backs up Hanhikivi NPP and rejects Olkiluoto 4 NPP project

Finland's economy minister will present next Tuesday a proposal to the Finnish Government for decisions on supplementary applications submitted by Fennovoima and Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) in the spring of 2014 concerning supplements to existing decisions-in-principle to build two nuclear power units in Finland.

The ministry of economy will propose to reject Teollisuuden Voima's (TVO) application for a 5-year extension to its licence to build the Olkiluoto 4 nuclear reactor (1,450 MW) to compensate for the delay in the Olkiluoto 3 unit project that has not yet entered production.

Conversely, the ministry of economy will back the Hanhikivi nuclear project (Rosatom 1,200 MW AES-2006 PWR) by Fennovoima (34% RAOS Voima Oy that is a subsidiary of Rosatom), under the condition that at least 60% of the project shares would be in Finnish ownership. The decision-in-principle will expire if Fennovoima does not submit its application for a construction license for the plant to the Government by 30 June 2015.
