Finland approves lease of maritime areas for 1.8 GW of offshore wind projects

Finland has approved the lease of two state-owned maritime areas for two upcoming offshore wind projects in the Baltic Sea totalling up to 1.8 GW, one off coast of Korsnäs and the other off Pori, both located in western Finland.

The Korsnäs area, located about 15 km from the coast, will become home to a 1.3 GW complex comprising 70 to 100 turbines of a 12 MW to 20 MW capacity. The project is developed by Metsähallitus, Finland’s Forest Administration, which will seek a partner to realise the scheme, expecting the wind farm to be in operation by 2028. The necessary investment is estimated to be between €1.5bn and €2.5bn.

The Pori area, located about 30 km from the coast, already supports the 42 MW Tahkoluoto wind farm (Finland’s first offshore wind farm, operational since 2017) which will be expanded upon by Finnish power produces Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy. The expanded facility will reach up to 500 MW and will have 43 turbines of between 11 MW and 20 MW. It is expected to produce 1 to 2 TWh of power annually.
