Financial close for three renewable projects in Mexico (over 600 MW)

According to the Mexican Secretary of Energy (Sener), the first three projects of the 52 renewable projects selected in the second Clean Energy Auction (February 2017) have reached financial close.

The 424 MW Reynosa III wind project, developed by Zuma Energy in the state of Tamaulipas, secured a US$330m syndicated loan from Bancomext, Nafin and Banobras. Consequently, Zuma Energy has signed a conditional agreement with Vestas on the supply of V136-3.45 MW turbines (up to 443 MW) for the project. The conditional agreement comprises supply, installation, and commissioning of the wind turbines, as well as a 15-year Active Output Management 5000 service agreement.

The second project is the 250 MW Mezquite wind project, developed by Cubico in Nuevo Leon; Cubico secured a US$240m loan from Bancomext, Banobras, and the North American Development Bank. Cubico, in partnership with Alten, also secured financing for a solar PV project in Aguascalientes.

In February 2017, 34 companies were selected in the second Electricity Auction. They will invest US$6.6bn to build 52 new renewable power plants in Mexico by 2019. The new capacities, estimated at around 5 GW, will be equivalent to the current consumption of electricity in Mexico City and will be installed in 15 states of the country.

A third Electricity Auction is expected to offer 1,300 MW of new capacities, enough to generate 5.5 TWh of electricity (5.5 million clean energy certificates).
