Final turbine installed at the 900 MW Greater Changhua 1-2a wind parks (Taiwan)

Ørsted has installed the final turbine at its 900 MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind parks, located off Taiwan’s western coast. All 111 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbines have been installed at the site.

Offshore construction on the Greater Changhua 1 and 2a wind parks began in 2021 with the installation of the first wind turbine jacket foundation and the laying of the first export cable. The Greater Changhua 1 and 2a project was originally planned to be finalised in 2023 but completion was pushed back to 2024 due to bottlenecks in the supply chain.

At the end of 2022, offshore wind represented less than 1% of Taiwan’s installed capacity (with 237 MW), as the island only installed its first offshore wind turbine in 2017. Onshore wind capacity stood at 1.34 GW at end-2022. Currently, Taiwan has nearly 3 GW of wind projects under construction and over 22 GW under development.
