The renewable project developer Skyborn Renewables has installed the final turbine at the 640 MW Yunlin offshore wind power plant, located off the western coast of Taiwan. All 80 Siemens Gamesa 8 MW turbines have now been installed at the wind park, which is being developed by Yunneng Wind Power, a subsidiary of Skyborn Renewables.
Construction of the offshore wind park started in 2020, and the first turbine was installed in April 2021. Full commissioning is expected before the end of 2024. Once completed, the Yunlin project is expected to generate enough electricity to power to over 600,000 Taiwanese households under a 20-year power purchase agreement signed with Taipower.
At the end of 2023, offshore wind represented 1% of Taiwan’s installed capacity (with 613 MW), as the island only installed its first offshore wind turbine in 2017. Onshore wind capacity stood at nearly 2.1 GW at end-2023 (3% of the installed capacity).
