The UK-based battery energy storage system (BESS) developer Fidra Energy has secured up to £445m (€600m) in new equity investment from institutional investor EIG and the UK’s National Wealth Fund (NWF), to support the financial close of the 1.4 GW/3.1 GWh Thorpe Marsh BESS project in Doncaster, South Yorkshire (United Kingdom).
Set to become the largest standalone battery storage facility in the UK and one of the largest in Europe, the project will be built on the former site of a coal-fired power plant. In addition to equity, the project will benefit from £594m (over €800m) in new loan facilities provided by a group of international lenders. Construction is expected to begin in September 2025, with the site due to be operational from mid-2027.
