The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved the construction of four gas liquefaction and LNG export projects in Texas with a cumulated capacity of more than 50 Mt/year.
Three LNG projects are located around Brownsville, namely NextDecade's 27 Mt/year Rio Grande LNG project expected to be commissioned in stages as of 2023, Exelon's 6 Mt/year Annova LNG Brownsville project planned for 2024 and Dow Group's 4 Mt/yer Texas LNG project expected between 2023 and 2026. The fourth LNG project, developed by Cheniere Energy, will be located in Corpus Christi and will consist of seven small-scale (1.3 Mt/year) trains that should be commissioned in 2022 and 2023. These projects are also applying with the US Department of Energy (DoE) to secure authorisations to export LNG to countries without free trade agreements (non-FTA) with the United States.
The four projects are expected to boost the US liquefaction capacity, which stood at 34 Mt/year at the end of 2018 and should exceed 52 Mt/year by the end of 2019 and 73 Mt/year by the end of 2020.
