The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved the construction and operation of the Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) LNG terminal, located in the US State of Louisiana. FERC has also simultaneously approved the construction of a 137 km gas pipeline.
The LNG terminal, which is being developed by Venture Global and is scheduled to enter full operation in 2026, is expected to have a capacity of 20 Mt/year of LNG and a peak capacity of up to 28 Mt/year under optimal conditions. In July 2023, FERC had given an environmental approval to the project, sparking objections from environmental activists.
So far, 9.25 Mt/year of the nameplate capacity for the CP2 project has been sold under long term (20-year) sales and purchase agreements (SPAs), including 1 Mt/year to be sold to Inpex (Japan), 1 Mt/year to China Gas Hongda Energy Trading (China), 1 Mt/year to JERA (Japan), 2 Mt/year to China Gas Holdings and 2.25 Mt/year to Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) (Germany).
