ExxonMobil has published some of its advancements on CCS technology during 2025, announcing that during the year it started a 2 Mt/year CCS project and increased its portfolio of CCS customers to about 9 Mt/year (ExxonMobil press release, 29/01/2026).
In July 2025 the company started commercial operations of a CCS project to capture up to 2 Mt/year of CO2 from CF Industries' Donaldsonville complex in Louisiana (United States), where ExxonMobil is expected to transport and permanently store the captured CO2, while CF Industries plans to produce approximately 1.9 Mt/year of low-carbon ammonia. The company has also contracted AtmosClear and Lake Charles Methanol II to transport and store a combined 2 Mt/year of CO2 from their planned projects in Louisiana. These agreements raise ExxonMobil's CCS portfolio to six customers and 9 MtCO2 contracted.
For 2026, the ExxonMobil expects to start capturing CO2 from New Generation Gas Gathering (NG3) natural gas processing facility in Louisiana, and to start CCS operations with its customers Linde and Nucor. The Low Carbon Data Center (LCDC) project is also expected to reach an FID before the end of the year. With this, the company is expecting to start a total of three projects in 2026.
