Exelon will not close its two nuclear plants in Illinois by end-2021

The Senate of Illinois (United States) has passed a bill that will provide US$700m in subsidies to Exelon over five years for operating the 2,250 MW Byron and 2,018 MW GW Dresden nuclear power plants in Illinois (US). The text was approved by the House of Illinois earlier in September 2021. In late July 2021, Exelon Generation had submitted decommissioning plans to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the Byron and Dresden nuclear plants due to rising costs, low electricity prices, the competition from gas-fired power plants and the lack of a clean energy legislation. The Byron nuclear power plant was expected to close in mid-September and Dresden in November 2021.

Exelon is the largest nuclear company in the United States, with a total capacity of 19 GW. Nuclear accounts for 8% of the country’s installed capacity, with 101 GW in 2020.
