The United Arab Emirates’ Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to prequalified companies and consortiums for the 1.5 GW Al-Ajban Solar PV IPP project, located near the town of Al-Ajban in the Abu Dhabi Emirate.
The RFP has been issued to bidders that passed the qualification process following the Expression of Interest (EOI) stage that took place in May 2022. A total of 43 companies and consortiums submitted EOIs, while 19 companies and consortiums qualified for the RFP stage after submitting Statements of Qualification. Responses to the RFP are expected by the end of the first quarter of 2023. The project will involve the development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance, and ownership of the plant, and associated infrastructure. The winner will own up to 40% of the entity, with the remaining stake held indirectly by the Abu Dhabi Government.
The Al Ajban Solar PV Project is expected to generate enough electricity to power 160,000 UAE households. Once operational it is expected to reduce Abu Dhabi’s emissions by up to 2.4 MtCO2/year.
The UAE targets a share of 44% of renewables in the energy mix in 2050. The country also aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 31.5% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
