EWE and VERBUND launch JV for a 500 MW hydrogen project in Germany

German utility EWE and Austrian electricity company VERBUND have established a joint venture to develop the 500 MW CHC Elektrolyse JadeWeser green hydrogen project in the Wesermarsch region of Lower Saxony, Germany (EWE press release, 09/10/2026). The joint venture will combine VERBUND's renewable electricity portfolio with EWE's hydrogen storage and infrastructure assets.

The project foresees the installation of up to 500 MW of electrolysis capacity in several phases. The facility is planned to start operations by 2032, becoming one of the largest hydrogen production projects in Europe. Hydrogen production is intended to supply customers in industry, mobility and the energy sector in Germany and neighbouring markets.

The facility will be connected to Germany's future hydrogen core network and will benefit from EWE's underground hydrogen storage infrastructure in north-western Germany. The partners expect the project to support the development of a regional hydrogen value chain centred on the Emden industrial area.
