Vietnam's power utility Electricité du Vietnam (EVN) has received approval from the government to develop the Quang Trach II LNG-fired power plant, to be built in the province of Quang Binh in central Vietnam. The power plant will use mixed-cycle gas turbine technology, with a total capacity of 1.5 GW, including 2 units, each with a capacity of 750 MW. Total investment for the project is estimated at about VND52,490bn (US$2.13bn).
Originally, the Quang Trach was designed to be a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 1.2 GW. The fuel conversion of the Quang Trach II Thermal Power Plant from coal to LNG has been approved by the Government in accordance with Vietnam's National Energy Development Strategy to 2030.
As of end-2023, gas-fired power plants represented 9% of Vietnam’s installed capacity, against 29% for coal-fired power plants. Vietnam plans to build 15 LNG-fired power plants by 2035 with a combined capacity of more than 22 GW, accounting for nearly 15% of the country’s total power generation mix.
