The State Corporation Commission of the State of Kansas (United States) has granted Evergy, a US energy operator, the authorization to raise by 8.6% its utility rates to finance the construction of 1.4 GW of natural gas-fired capacity and a solar power project. The utility plans to build two 710 MW CCGT facilities, the Viola and the McNew power plants, which should reach commercial operations by early 2029 and 2030, respectively. The ownership of the facilities will be equally divided between Evergy’s subsidiaries, Evergy Kansas Central and Evergy Missouri West. The projects are still required to obtain its construction approvals.
Additionally, Evergy plans to develop Kansas Sky, a 159 MWac (200 MWdc) solar facility to be located in Douglas County. Fully owned by its Evergy Kansas Central subsidiary, the solar park has an estimated cost of approximately US$230m and it is planned to complement the existing generation in the region when operational in December 2026.
By 2030, the company aims to reduce its owned generation carbon emissions by 70% compared to 2005 levels. The company also targets to reach net-zero carbon equivalent emissions, for scope 1 and 2, by 2045.
