EURA IPP, a joint venture between the Danish company Eurowind Energy and Austria’s Renalfa, has started construction of the 238 MW Tenevo solar park, located in eastern Bulgaria. The solar power plant, which is scheduled to be completed in early 2025, is the first phase of a wind-solar hybrid complex. A planned next phase of the Tenevo project will see the addition of over 250 MW of wind turbines, as well as 250 MW/500 MWh of battery storage to the solar installation.
As of end-2022, solar represented 14% of Bulgaria’s installed capacity with 1.9 GW, but only 4% of its power generation with 2 TWh. As for wind power, it made up 5% of the country’s installed capacity with 705 MW and 3% of its power generation with 1.5 TWh. Bulgaria currently has nearly 1.2 GW of solar capacity and 900 MW of wind capacity under development.
