European Union on its way to reach a 54% GHG emissions reduction by 2030

According to the EU Commission’s assessment of the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP’s), the EU Member States are on their way to collectively reduce their net GHG emissions by around 54% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels) and reaching a share of at least 42.5% of renewable energy. EU countries improved their updated NECPs following the Commission's recommendations and they should be in their way to reach their energy and climate goals if they fully implement their existing and planned national and EU policies. The assessment provides a foundation for future discussions on the Union’s decarbonisation efforts towards reaching climate neutrality by 2050. 

Although Belgium, Estonia and Poland have not yet submitted their final plans, their overall targets were included in the EU assessment. Their respective NECP’s should be reviewed shortly after the Commission receives them. Slovakia’s final NECP is currently undergoing its individual assessment. 

Besides the NECP’s, the Commission plans to continue to support Member States' efforts in implementation and in addressing the remaining gaps through strategic initiatives such as the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal and the Affordable Energy Action Plan.
