European Union clears €600m support scheme for solar power (France)

The European Commission has approved a €600m French support scheme for innovative solar power installations under EU State aid rules and under the 2014 Guidelines on State Aid for Environmental Protection and Energy. The measure is meant to prop up the production of renewable electricity from innovative solar installations (at ground level or on buildings) in France and will support the deployment of approximately 350 MWac of additional power generation capacity. The scheme targets facilities with a capacity between 100 kW and 5 MW.

The beneficiaries of the aid will be selected through tenders organised until 2019 and will receive either support from the French State Budget in the form of a feed-in tariff (FiT) or of a premium on top of the market price for a 20-year period.

According to the European Commission, the measure will help France meet its climate objectives in line with the environmental targets of the EU, without unduly distorting competition. France's target of renewable energy sources in the domestic gross final energy consumption is currently set at 23% by 2020.
