European Parliament seeks to phase out palm oil in biodiesel

The European Parliament has adopted a draft report within the frame of the RED (Renewable Energy Directive) which proposes a new policy for palm oil use in biodiesel, due to deforestation concerns.

The Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) pointed out that 46% of all palm oil imported into Europe in 2014 was used as fuel for transportation. This figure represents a 34% increase compared with 2010.

The Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) has proposed to take measures against the use of palm oil to produce biofuels, which should be phased out by 2020. Moreover, they also mentioned that palm oil has the largest GHG emissions of all biofuel sources for transport.

Meanwhile, the Transport & Environment Non Governmental Organisation has also published a policy paper requesting the European Commission to completely phase out land-based biodiesel by 2025 and to decrease the cap on all crop-based biofuels to zero by 2030.
