The European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee has voted in favour of an EU-wide objective to more than double the EU’s production of renewable energy to 45% by 2030 (from 22% currently). This new 2030 objective represents a substantial increase compared to the 40% target proposed by the European Commission in 2021 as part of its “Fit for 55” climate plan. The Committee also demanded that member states to set an indicative target for innovative renewable technology of at least 5% of newly installed renewable energy capacity.
This decision comes as the EU wants to move away from dependence from Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible, in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The Committee also voted to raise energy savings targets to 40% in final energy consumption and 42.5% in primary energy consumption by 2030. This represents a 14.5% final energy consumption cut by 2030 compared to 2021. In addition, the share of biofuels and biogas in the transport sector should rise to at least 0.5% by 2025 and 2.2% by 2030. The share of renewable fuels of non-biological origin, including hydrogen, should increase to at least 2.6% by 2028 and at least 5.7% by 2030 in the transport sector.
The decision will be submitted to a vote in front of the full Parliament during the 12 to 15 September plenary session.
