The European Parliament has voted to raise the share of renewables in the EU’s final energy consumption to 45% by 2030 (the current EU target is at least 32 %), under the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED). The legislation defines sub-targets for sectors such as transport, buildings, and district heating and cooling. This target is also backed by the European Commission under its RepowerEU package. This new 2030 objective represents a substantial increase compared to the 40% target proposed by the European Commission in 2021 as part of its Fit for 55 climate plan.
In addition, the parliament also backed the revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), raising the EU target for reducing final and primary energy consumption. Member states must collectively ensure final energy consumption is reduced by at least 40% by 2030 and 42.5% in primary energy consumption compared to 2007 projections (the current EU target is 32.5% for final and primary energy consumption).
The European Parliament and the Presidency of the Council will now enter into negotiations on the files, on which EU Ministers have set their position in June 2022.
