European Energy receives approval for a 250 MW solar project in Italy

The Danish renewable developer European Energy has obtained the building permit for a 250 MW solar power plant, which will be located in the municipality of Vizzini, near Catania, Sicily (southern Italy). This is the largest solar park project in Italy to date. Once operational, the plant will generate enough power to supply 130,000 Italian households and will avoid the emission of 165 ktCO2/year. In addition to renewable energy production, the project includes a reforestation and biodiversity program covering 200 hectares of land.

European Energy has already constructed several solar parks in Italy, including the 130 MW Troia project in the Apulia region of Italy, which was the largest solar farm in Italy when it was connected to the grid in 2019.

As of end-2022, solar represented 20% of Italy’s installed capacity with 25 GW, and nearly 19% of its power generation with 27.5 TWh. The country currently has more than 3 GW of solar projects under development.
