European Council adopts proposal on new Euro 7 car emissions regulations

The Council of the European Union has adopted its position on Euro 7, a proposed regulation covering emissions and battery durability standards for cars, vans, buses, and trucks, striking a balance between a balance between stringent requirements for vehicle emissions and additional investments for the industry. The Council's position maintains existing emission limits for light-duty vehicle (private cars and vans), with adjustments for heavy-duty vehicles (buses, coaches, and heavy commercial vehicles).

This regulation aims to improve air quality by setting more stringent rules for vehicle emissions in road transport. It also addresses non-exhaust emissions (particles from brakes and tyres), battery durability in electric cars, and imposes stricter vehicle lifetime requirements.

The Council's position now paves the way for negotiations with the European Parliament. This regulation is part of the Commission's Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy (2020) and Zero-Pollution Action Plan (2021), seeking to make European vehicles cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
