The European Council adopts new regulation on gas supply security (EU)

The European Council has adopted a revised regulation regarding the measures to safeguard the security of European gas supplies. The key components of the updated regulation are the introduction of a solidarity mechanism which will have a mandatory application in extreme supply crisis scenarios, an increased monitoring of provisions in the gas supply contracts, enhanced regional coordination and cooperation between member states and mandatory regional preventive action and emergency plans. Regional risk assessments will be prepared jointly by member states within a given regional risk group.

Moreover, the member states will have specific obligations towards the Energy Community and the European Commission (EC)  will be in charge of coordination issues and the application of the legal framework between the EU and the Energy Community. The legislative act is scheduled to enter into force 4 days after being published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
