European Commission proposes amendment to take into account Brexit (UK)

The European Commission has adopted a decision to amend the existing European Union's energy efficiency legislation to take account of the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. Indeed, the energy consumption figures currently highlighted in the revised Energy Efficiency Directive and the Regulation on the Governance of the Energy Union are based on EU28 figures and do not take into account the Brexit.

As the UK intends will withdraw from the EU on 29 March 2019 as per the Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union, the European Commission points out the necessity to reduce these consumption figures in order to reflect an European Union with the remaining 27 member states only. The current EU28 projections highlight that the 2030 primary energy consumption figures should be no more than 1,273 Mtoe while the final energy consumption figures should not be higher than 956 Mtoe. The corresponding projection for the EU27 lowers the two objectives to 1,128 Mtoe and 846 Mtoe, respectively.

However, this amendment will not modify the June 2018 agreement on the EU's energy efficiency objectives, which has been set at a minimum of 32.5% for 2030.
