European Commission approves Hungary's renewable support scheme

The European Commission (EC) has endorsed the Hungarian renewable electricity support scheme and underlined its compliance with the EU state aid rules and in particular with the EC's 2014 Guidelines on State Aid for Environmental Protection and Energy.

The Hungarian scheme has a yearly budget of Ft45bn (€146m) and plans state support through feed-in tariff (FiT) limited to small installations below 500 kW or through a price premium for facilities with a capacity between 500 kW and 1 MW. As for wind parks and projects with a capacity above 1 MW, the premium will be determined under the framework of a competitive bidding process which will also select its beneficiaries.

The EC's 2014 Guidelines on State Aid for Environmental Protection and Energy enable Member States to support the power production from renewable energy sources which are subject to certain conditions. These regulations are meant to back the EU's energy and climate targets.
