The European Commission has approved a €9.7bn Italian scheme to support the construction of a total of 17.65 GW of new renewable power plants, to foster the transition towards a net-zero economy.
The aid will be granted to onshore wind, solar PV, hydropower, and sewage gases power generation facilities lower than 1 MW, on the basis of a transparent and non-discriminatory bidding process. it will take the form of variable payment under 20-year two-way contract for difference (CfD) and will be granted before 31 December 2025. Selected installations must enter into operation within 36 months after the date of granting of the aid. The indicated €9.7bn budget of the scheme is based on market price estimates, and actual net support may be considerably lower in case of higher-than-expected market prices.
The scheme was approved under the State aid Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework (TCTF) adopted by the Commission in March 2023 and amended in November 2023 and in May 2024.
