European Commission approves changes to the Dutch SDE++ support scheme

The European Commission has approved changes to The Netherlands' Stimulering Duurzame Energieproductie (‘SDE++') scheme to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under EU State aid rules. The €30bn SDE++ support scheme was approved by the European Commission in December 2020 and amended in December 2021. New amendments aim at allocating at least €750m to projects in low-temperature heat (including geothermal, heat pumps and solar thermal), high-temperature heat (including electrification options for industry via heat pumps and electric boilers), and molecules (including hydrogen production via electrolysis, production of biomethane, and advanced renewable transport fuels). The modified scheme will also cover air water heat pumps for heating buildings, and the possible future electrification of offshore platforms. It will run until 31 December 2025.
