European Commission adopts 5th list of energy Projects of Common Interest

The European Commission has adopted the fifth list of energy Projects of Common Interest (PCIs), including 98 key cross-border energy infrastructure projects. Most of the projects (67) are related to power transmission and storage projects in Western Europe, in Central Eastern and South Europe and in the Baltic countries, as part of their interconection projects; electricity PCIs also include two priority offshore grid interconnections between France and Ireland ("Celtic Interconnector"), between Denmark, Germany, Netherlands ("North Sea Wind Power Hub"), and the Green Hydrogen Hub Compressed Air Storage project in Denmark. Five cross-border smart grid projects are included in the PCI list (in Czechia and Slovakia, Hungary and Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, Czechia and Germany, and between Austria, Croatia and Slovenia) along 20 gas projects: no new gas infrastructure was added since the 4th PCI list and gas projects are considered necessary to ensure security of supply for all Member States. Finally, six CO2 network projects are included in the PCI list: CO2 TransPorts (Netherlands and North Sea ports), Northern Lights (United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, and Norway), Athos (Netherlands, Ireland and Germany), Aramis (Netherlands), Dartagnan (France and North Sea), and Poland – EU CCS Interconnector (Poland and North Sea countries). The 5th PCI list will be submitted to the European Parliament and the Council, which will have 2 months to accept or reject the list.
