€80m Interconnector between Italy and Austria starts operations

The Italian power transmission system operator (TSO) Terna has commissioned its €80m interconnector between Italia and Austria.  The 220 kV underground power cable connects substations in Glorenza (northern Italy) and Nauders (eastern Austria) over 28 km, doubling the current capacity between the to countries to 300 MW and improving the reliability of the electrical grid in the involved areas.

Italy’s electricity transmission network stretches over 75 000 km, with interconnection capacities with 7 countries: Switzerland, France Greece, Slovenia, Austria, Malta, and, since 2019, Montenegro. At the end of 2022, Austria had interconnections with five countries, namely the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland.
