€2.8bn UK-Germany interconnection project receives all regulatory approvals

The £2.4bn (€2.8bn) NeuConnect interconnection project between the United Kingdom and Germany has been granted all key regulatory approvals, following the granting by the Trade Inspectorade of the German state of Oldenburg of the 2nd partial approval for the construction and operation of the converter station on the German side of the energy link. The 1.4 GW interconnection link is expected to start operations in 2028.

NeuConnect started construction in July 2023, being the first-ever interconnection link between the UK and Germany. The subsea interconnector plans to span over 725 km and connect the Isle of Grain in Kent (UK) to the Wilhelmshaven region in northern Germany, allowing electricity to flow in both directions. The project is led by the investors Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, Kansai Electric Power and TEPCO.
