The EU is on track to meet its GHG emissions cut target by 2030

The European Commission has adopted the 2020 State of the Energy Union Report and released individual assessments of the 27 National Energy and Climate Plans, which analyses the pathway and ambition of each Member State towards the current 2030 climate and energy targets. While the EU is on track to outperform its current target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30%, several countries, including Germany, France and the Netherlands, are projected to fall short of GHG reduction objectives, while others, such as Croatia and Spain, should overachieve theirs.

According to the European Commission, the share of renewable energy in the EU 27 energy mix reached 18.9% in 2018 and overall, the EU is on track for attaining its renewable energy targets for 2020. The EU-27 is projected to reach a share of renewable energy between 22.8% and 23.1% in gross final energy consumption in 2020. Most of the Member States should meet or even outperform their targets, but three Member States (Belgium, France, and Poland) are at severe risk of failing to do so. In addition, two Member States (the Netherlands and Luxembourg) are at moderate risk of not meeting the target.
