The European Commission has initiated legal action against eight EU Member States for not implementing new EU rules to accelerate permitting procedures for renewable energy projects, as required by Directive (EU) 2023/2413. The deadline for transposing these rules was 1 July 2024. The Commission sent reasoned opinions to Cyprus, Italy, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden for not notifying transposition measures, and to Bulgaria, France, and the Netherlands for inadequate transposition efforts.
Additionally, the Commission sent reasoned opinions to Hungary and Poland for not fully transposing EU rules for the internal electricity market by the 31 December 2020 deadline. Belgium, Estonia, Latvia, and Romania also received reasoned opinions for incomplete transposition of the 2018 Renewable Energy Directive.
Member States have two months to respond and comply, or the Commission may refer the cases to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
