The EU plans to simplify legislation for its CBAM and modernise its power grid

The EU’s Parliament and Council have agreed on changes to the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) to simplify existing legislation. The modifications include a new de minimis mass threshold of 50 tonnes per year to be included under CBAM rules, the simplification of the authorisation process, calculation of emissions and verification rules, while retaining coverage over 99% of total CO2 emissions from imports of iron, steel, aluminium, cement and fertilisers. The deal will enter into force three days after publication in the EU Official Journal.

In addition, the EU Parliament has also adopted proposals to modernise the EU’s electricity grid, enhance resilience, integrate renewables, and simplify permits to meet the EU's energy goals. The action plan seeks to increase cross-border and national-level grid capacity and to modernise infrastructure. The Commission is expected to propose a European Grids Package by the end of 2025.
