EU Parliament committees adopt framework on zero-carbon transition

The European Parliament committees on energy (ITRE) and environment (ENVI) have adopted a joint position on the future Governance Regulation, which will create a framework for implementing the zero-carbon transition in the European Union (EU) by 61 voices in favour, 46 against and 9 abstentions. The present MEPs voted in favour of increasing the EU target to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2050 at the latest.

Besides, the committees called for a new EU zero-carbon roadmap to be developed by January 2019. Under the proposed Governance Regulation, member states would have to update their national energy and climate plans every five years and would have to follow linear trajectories for the development of renewables, so that member states can reach the EU-wide objective of 27% renewable energies for 2030.

The Energy Council is scheduled to agree on its position on the Governance Regulation by 18 December 2017.
