EU Environment Council approves target of 40% GHG emission cut by 2030

The European Environment Council has approved the EU's Intended Nationally Determined Contribution to the new global climate agreement, for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The target is consistent with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s assessment of the reductions required from developed countries as a group, to reduce emissions by 80-95% compared to 1990 levels by 2050. It is also in line with the objective of reducing global emissions by 60% compared to 2010 levels by 2050, at the upper end of the IPCC's range of 40-70% reductions necessary to achieve the below 2°C target.

In October 2014, Member States had fixed a target to reach at least 40% greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2030. Member States also agreed to increase the share of renewable energies to at least 27% against 17% currently (binding at the EU-level, but not binding at national level) and to improve energy efficiency by 27% by 2030.
